An introductory module to the game design process and Unity: we were openly tasked with designing an island, the characteristics of which was left for us to decide

Task
As an introduction to game design and Unity, this module consisted mainly of a series of tutorials and tasks to familiarise us with general game development and production. The tutorials covered the basics of Unity to the point where we could be let free and work on something of our own. As part of the submission - and as a way of applying the knowledge we learned - we were given the open task to design an island of our choice in Unity. This required with us to come up with a concept, produce some initial designs and plans before then implementing as much as we could into our Unity project.

My approach to this task was to try and produce something a bit different than a conventional grassy island. I (very optimistically) decided to try and create an island that was set on another planet with the feeling of abandonment being key to the overall world. This was ultimately fun but challenging and despite the final submission not turning out exactly the way I wanted, there was many lessons learned from this project. Namely, this was insightful into how difficult it can be to create entire worlds and how time consuming it can be to gather and produce all the required assets and systems. Oh, and scope... it ALWAYS comes back to scope!
My Tasks
-
Learned the basics of Unity in order to produce levels and content
-
Designed and produced a concept for a level for a hypothetical game set on an island
-
Planned out and constructed the level in Unity
-
Gathered and amended various available assets to construct and populate the level
-
Produced a few additional assets using Photoshop, Blender, Substance Designer and Substance Painter
-
Created some basic C# scripts for functionality and gameplay in the level
-
Documented everything... like... everything!

We were required to document our process and construction of our level as part of the submission. The document I produced covers my initial designs, the construction of the main sections of the level and most of the various components and features that made up these sections. As such, it's a bit of a big document, but, if you're feeling courageous, it's available here: click here

The embedded video below is a demonstration of the playable submission I created. It can probably get a bit boring at parts so you might want to flick through it instead! (...making an entire world is fun, but tricky!)
